TIKI TAANE
He Taonga Maori (Maori Court)
View gallery
The taonga (treasures) in this gallery are the ancestral representations of the many tribes of Aotearoa (New Zealand). The taonga provide descendants with tangible links to their ancestral landscapes, their history and the people that came before them. They embody spiritual power measured in terms of mana (ancestral authority), tapu (restriction from everyday being) and korero (associated narratives), and these taonga continue to be viewed as key symbols of tribal identity by Maori today.
Kaitiaki
Track 1 length 12:52
Tiki Taane’s composition takes the listener on a journey amongst the taonga of the Maori galleries, as well as a journey through time. You will hear three distinct parts to the composition, reflecting periods in the history of Aotearoa, as you consider the collections.
The title of Taane’s composition is Kaitiaki. The word means caretaker or guardian, and describes the role of the Museum as well as Taane’s feelings of responsibility and pride as he viewed and drew inspiration from the Museum’s significant collection of taonga puoro – traditional Maori instruments. Within this piece you will hear koauau and putorino, or wooden flutes; putatara, the conch shell; and pukaea, a wooden trumpet. These have been filtered and threaded with electronically generated sounds.
“Taonga are more than just objects, they embody our tikanga, our values. They have a mauri, a life force, that connects our ancestors with present and future generations. That’s what I wanted to reflect with this track – linking the sounds of taonga puoro with the music of today, and the future” he says.
