Landmarks Gallery

Landmarks gallery cuts a pathway through objects designed and made in Europe over the past four centuries, including mid-1700s court fashion, the designs of Coco Chanel, Art Nouveau and 21st-century design.

Very Old Sequins

Track 2 length 3:41

Walking through the Landmarks gallery, Tim Coster thought about the different materials represented in the collection – earthenware, wood, glass, plastic – and how he might represent these in sound. He thought about the texture of the objects on display. What, for instance, is the acoustic character of earthenware?

And he thought about the gallery itself, not just in terms of the items on display but the way the layout presents a path through several hundred years – past the age of oak and classicism, to modernism and the 21st century.

The large glass case near the centre of the gallery, containing three formal costumes from the 18th century, suggested to Coster an empty ballroom. Listen out for this around the middle of the composition. The tower clock, positioned nearby, finds its way into the music too, but it seems to be sounding a strange waltz, almost as though the costumes have come to life and begun to dance.

From there we are guided swiftly towards modernity – typewriters and telephones, polyethelene and chromed steel, represented by more modern and brash electronic sounds.

Tim Coster graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (sculpture) from the Auckland University of Technology in 2002, and has since worked as a sound artist, mainly with audio releases and live performances. Auckland-based Coster uses field recordings and other gathered musical sounds, processed by computer and digital/analogue looping devices, to create shifting delicate sound works. Coster has collaborated with various artists and performed and exhibited at many festivals and galleries. He is currently working with Currer Bells, Cathedrals and Silent Spring. Coster also curates the CLaudia label, whose first full CD release was Compact Listen, a 2007 compilation featuring New Zealand artists curated for the High Street Project gallery.
