LATE 03: Voyage of the Ancestors

LATE 03: Panellists and Artists

Thursday, 5 November 2009

LATE 03 explored the voyage of our ancestors. The human journey to New Zealand was of the most remarkable migrations ever. How did these voyages take place, and what happened when we arrived here?

'Late-comers'.

Tales of heroic ocean voyages, and a host of genre-spanning performances throughout the Museum, again drew a full house toour latest LATE. Stepping into the newly redesigned grand foyer, guests were treated to a rare public performance by Elena, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished and distinctive violinists. Within the majestic Maori court, the Museum’s kapa haka group, Te Rau Kura, welcomed speakers and those gathered to hear the evening’s discussion. While Matahi Brightwell and Geoff Irwin recounted personal and ancestral voyages across the Pacific, Jock Phillips explained how early Pakeha settlers were enticed to New Zealand, and contemplated the realities they faced during their voyage and their experiences upon arrival.

Back in the foyer, literary icon Sam Hunt, recited rhythmic prose, followed by David Kilgour and his guitar. Meanwhile, in the Oceans Gallery upstairs, the soothing sounds of oboist Russel Walder blended perfectly with the marine setting. Across the divide, SJD jammed with fellow artists in a multi-tiered workshop space which, for the evening, had been transformed into a bar with ambient, industrial chic.

As LATE 03 came to a close, the new exterior illumination provided a spectacular backdrop to exploding fireworks, viewed from the Museum's front steps around Auckland city and across the harbour.

Great Music

SJD’s music is uninterested in high-octane dance-floor posturing, opting instead for beautiful melodies. Based around the talents of Sean James Donnelly, the group has grown from a studio one-man band to a live reality with addition of guitarist James Duncan, keyboard don Dominic Blaazer and vocalist Sandy Mill, who were later joined by guitarist Paul McLaney and drummer Chris O Connor. Mahia-raised, Wellington-based violinist Elena mixes classical and Maori musical traditions with an energetic performance style. (More about the Artists)
