It was a fitting finale to the first LATE at the Museum series: a panel discussion with four heavyweights of New Zealand science and thought, and music from a performer whose songs have defined a uniquely Kiwi sound.
LATE 06: Species Identity Now & Future featured a discussion with Professor Peter Gluckman, Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister; Chief Scientist at AgResearch Dr Stephen Goldson; Professor Rosalind Hursthouse, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Auckland; and neurosurgeon and Professor of Medical Ethics Dr Grant Gillett.
The panel explored ideas around the evolution of the human species, and whether we will be able to adapt in time to the immense change we are generating.
Later, Shayne Carter’s band Dimmer performed in the Atrium. Inducted into New Zealand's Music Hall of Fame at last year's Tui Awards with his other famous act, Straitjacket Fits, Shayne Carter is a man who has helped shape the story of Kiwi music – and he showed why at LATE 06.
Following Dimmer, up-and-coming roots band Six60 closed out the evening in exuberant style. LATE 06 also saw the opening of the Museum’s new exhibition Wonderland: The Mystery of the Orchid.
Where will everything belong in the earth's future? Will the power of the flower overcome the power of the dollar?
Thursday, 02 July, 6.30pm
Two of New Zealand's greatest minds and one of our most acclaimed musicians feature at Auckland Museum's LATE 06: Species Identity Now and Future. The grand finale of the LATE "Identity" series sees a panel discussion with Professor Peter Gluckman and Dr Stephen Goldson, alongside a performance by legendary Shayne Carter and his band Dimmer. It also celebrates the opening of the museum's new exhibition Wonderland: The Mystery of the Orchid.
Smart Talk
LATE 06 investigates how species are continually adapting, and the ways this affects the world around us. The evening‟s panel discussion, moderated by Findlay Macdonald, features Professor Gluckman, Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister and recipient of our top science award, the Rutherford Medal. Also on the panel is Chief Scientist at AgResearch, Dr Goldson, who is widely recognised as a world leader in the areas of biosecurity and science advocacy. Dr Goldson was recently named one of New Zealand‟s most influential people.
Great Music
Performing in the Atrium is Dimmer, whose front man Shayne Carter was last year inducted into New Zealand‟s Music Hall of Fame. Since emerging from the fertile Dunedin scene with his band Straightjacket Fits, Carter‟s music has helped define a uniquely Kiwi sound.
The entire Museum will be open to the public on this night, allowing you to experience the exciting Sonic Museum exhibition. Headphones available for LATE 06 (no charge) from the grand foyer.
Food and a cash bar will be available. Please enter via the Southern Atrium
