LATE 04: Isolation

LATE 04: Panellists and Artists

Thursday, 3 December 2009

Tens of millions of years ago the New Zealand landmass separated from Gondwanaland with its cargo of plants and animals. But is there another theory?

LATE 04: Isolation closed out the year in style. The panel discussion featured two heavy-weights of New Zealand science – geologist Hamish Cambell of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, and George Gibbs, Senior Research Associate at the School of Biological Sciences. In a lively discussion moderated by Finlay Macdonald, the two scientists sparred over the emergence of the New Zealand landmass. The discussion produced what blog commentator Paul Reynolds described as his quote of the year, “New Zealand is above the water line against its will.”

Following the discussion, the LATE flipped the script completely. Instead of bands, the evening featured a colourful Christmas cabaret performance directed by actor and broadcaster Oliver Driver. The cabaret’s eclectic cast included Mika, Helen Medlyn, Cameron Rhodes as Santa, and the popular Petit Cheval Burlesque dancers. It was a memorable way to close out 2009’s hugely successful LATE at the Museum events, voted by Metro Magazine as “Best Fun Getting all Pointy Headed”.
