Insects and Arachnids

Investigate some of New Zealand's smallest animals and their ecosystems.

Using live and preserved specimens we investigate some of the smallest yet most important organisms in New Zealand’s ecosystem.

What does it feel like when a stick insect walks across your hand? What does a bumblebee hive look like? What makes an insect an insect? Is a spider an insect?  How can organisms so small be important to life on Earth?

In this programme students focus on a variety of small organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit. Using live and preserved specimens, mostly found in New Zealand’s natural environment, students investigate their life cycles, habitats and behaviours.

In their detailed inspections, students also use entomological tools to discover more about small creatures in the animal kingdom that are often unseen, unknown and even reviled.
