Volcanoes

Explore a key feature of Auckland’s natural landscape and discover how to be better prepared for life within Auckland’s active volcanic field.

Sit in the lounge of 7A Puia St, St Heliers and view a terrifying, simulated eruption in Auckland harbour through the home’s ranch sliders - supplemented by breaking news bulletins provided by the TV One News team.

Auckland, the largest city in the country, is built upon an active volcanic field. What does this mean for those living here and how has the volcanic field helped to shape the landscape of Auckland over the last 250,000 years?

Students will explore the processes behind the three types of volcanic eruption that are common in Auckland as well as getting their hands upon a range of volcanic material.

The impact of a volcanic eruption within Auckland will be examined and students are given the opportunity to conduct some scientific investigations to help understand the range of volcanic monitoring techniques that are currently used.
