Matariki

Nau mai ki te whakanui te wa o Matariki.

Welcome and join us in celebrating Matariki.

Matariki is a time of reflection, preparation and of the community being together. Conservation and guardianship of the land from a Maori perspective is the primary focus of our Matariki programme.

Through this programme students will work throughout the Museum with Maori educators to reflect how Matariki relates to Te Ao Tawhito (the world of the ancestors).

Within the Maori galleries, He Taonga Maori and Te Ao Turoa, the focus is on identity and the relationship between people and the land.

In the Learning Lab students engage in further activities as they work through three days of the lunar calendar during Matariki. Each day focuses on activities related to the realm of a specific atua (diety). For example, in relation to Tangaroa (atua of the sea) students will help make a fishing net and other small objects that they will take away as reminders of their experiences.
