ANZAC Day 2009

Auckland Museum was built as a memorial to the 12,000 people from the Auckland province who died in the first and second world wars. Every year, Auckland War Memorial Museum, the RSA and Auckland City Council mark ANZAC day with a series of services and commemorative events.
This year the Museum will again open immediately after the dawn service, enabling Aucklanders to further commemorate the day. No donation will be requested.

Illuminate: Names of the Fallen
Wednesday 22, Thursday 23, Friday 24 April, 7.30pm-11pm Northern Façade
The centrepiece of this year’s Auckland War Memorial Museum ANZAC commemorations is the free Illuminate event. Contemplate the sacrifice of our young nation as the names of the 29,898 New Zealanders who have died while serving their country – from the Anglo-Boer War to recent peace keeping missions – scroll across the northern façade of the Museum.
Visitors are invited to watch the names from the steps of the Cenotaph and then come inside the Museum to sign a digital Book of Remembrance and look up relatives' war records on the Museum's Cenotaph Database. A licensed coffee cart will be open selling hot drinks and refreshments. Activities are also available to keep the children entertained.
Names of the Fallen:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
