Fabulous Fridays Season Two

The popular Fabulous Fridays programme is back! Using the exhibition Wonderland: The Magic of the Rose as inspiration, garden experts give a series of discussions on the care of roses, as well as their captivating hold on culture. The discussions will be facilitated by Radio Live Broadcaster, columnist and gardening personality Maggie Barry.

The Magic of the Rose: Cultivating the Queen of the Summer Garden

Discover how to display roses to their best advantage in a garden setting. We'll look at time honoured traditions and innovative designs using colour co-ordinated plant combinations.

The panel features some of Auckland's most knowledgeable rose breeders and enthusiasts, who will share their growing techniques and tips with you. The line-up includes Jack Hobbs, Curator and Manager of Auckland Botanic Gardens; Karen Lowther, award-winning designer and manager of Eden Gardens and Jocelen Janon, President of Heritage Roses New Zealand, who will explain what makes the rose unique.

Take advantage of a combined 150 years of rose growing knowledge and come armed with your own questions.

The Culture of the Rose: The Rose’s Enduring Allure

Maggie Barry will be joined by rose experts and designers to discuss the symbolism and influence of the rose in art and culture.  The panel features top New Zealand designer Trelise Cooper; art critic Keith Stuart and Auckland Museum's Botany Curator, Ewen Cameraon.

The fragrance and beauty of the flower has seen the flower associated with a host of heavenly beings, from ancient Greek goddesses to Christian saints. In art and literature the rose symbolises sentiments of romantic love as well cycles of life and death.

Auckland Museum Auditorium.  Please gather in the southern atrium outside the Wonderland exhibit.

On the day of the event tickets may not be purchased online or over the phone.  If tickets still remain, you may purchase them from any Museum ticket desk, however we recommend booking in advance.
