Fashion and Uses

The beloved rose

The rose has been used as decoration in fashion for nearly 4000 years. It has been embroidered, stitched, printed and wrought in precious metal for use on more frocks, stockings, hats and jewellery than can be counted.

The fashion for growing garden roses took off after Empress Josephine of France’s passion for roses infected the gentry of Europe in the early 1800s. Over the next 100 years, rose-growing spread from the gardens of great houses to the backyards of suburbia.

As breeders created new roses, each fashion era found the garden varieties for its time, from floral bouffant to elegant and understated. The queen of flowers reinvents herself for every generation.
