 Jan Hellriegel

Jan Hellriegel

Jan Hellriegel was born in West Auckland to a family of six. While it’s true she worked at her father's panelbeater, it was, contrary to popular legend, in the office and not bending iron. Nonetheless, she has always been the New Zealand media's 'Westie' darling.

Jan moved to Dunedin to attend Otago University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, and met up with the friends who would later become Cassandra's Ears. By 1991, Jan was back in Auckland to begin recording material for her first solo album, having signed a record deal with heavyweights Warner Records. It's My Sin was released in 1993, and created Jan's first real wave of success. The album scored some major hits, which have since become local anthems. She was the favoured performer at Mountain Rock festival in 1993, and fronted for visiting bands including The Cure and Jeff Buckley. She released two albums to Australasian critical acclaim: It’s My Sin in 1992 and Tremble in 1995. Jan took several years out of the industry to raise her young children, venturing back to the studio last year to produce a new album All Grown Up, which was released to loud critical acclaim. Critics hailed the return of Jan as one of the musical highlights of 2009.

 The Bellbirds

The Bellbirds

The Bellbirds were formed mid-2009 with the musical intent of placing songs and vocals in a stripped back setting – a way of ensuring lyrics and melodies don’t get lost behind noisy instrumentation. With the melodies and harmonies of a 60s baroque pop sensibility combined with bittersweet lyrics; the birds and bees are miserable but achingly beautiful.

The jewel in the crown of The Bellbirds is the soulful, emotional voice of Sandy Mill. The diamond-studded scepter is Victoria Kelly’s spellbinding voice and keyboards. The throne itself: Don McGlashan’s powerful vocal and instrumental presence. And finally the very royal haemorrhoid cushion of Sean Donnelly’s mildly inept guitar and bass work stops the whole thing from becoming too slick and professional.
