Thursday, 6 May 2010
This year National Standards in literacy and numeracy were introduced into New Zealand schools. The moved was hailed by the National party as part of their plan to secure brighter futures for our students. Of course, not everyone agrees. Against this backdrop LATE 03: Innovate Education saw a spirited discussion on the future of our learning institutions.
The panel included Professor John Hattie, Head of Education at Auckland University, who was credited by Prime Minister John Key as the inspiration for our National Standards. However, as he explained at the LATE, he is also concerned a lack of implementation rigor could undo any potential benefits. Joining Professor Hattie on the panel was best-selling author Gordon Dryden and trailblazing principal Charmaine Pountney, who are vocal proponents of the need for education to adapt.
Entertainment included Auckland-based Heart Attack Alley, who brought their blues-infused folk to the stage in the Atrium. Kirsten Morrell won over audiences with a collection of quirky and gorgeous pop tunes from her new album Ultraviolet, before the eclectic but always entertaining Steve Abel & The Chrysalids closed out the evening with alt-pop panache.
