Media crews are exempt from location fees, however security and conservation charges, in some instances, may apply.  News crews may film during opening hours providing the crew is small and Museum staff are present.

Please contact the marketing department to book a suitable time.

Maori & Pacific Galleries

All requests to film in the Maori and Pacific Galleries must be deemed appropriate by Museum representatives.  Any filming/photography carried out for public consumption cannot show a close-up image of the Maori Meeting House, Hotunui. Sweeps of the Maori gallery are allowed, but not focussing on Hotunui or any other artefact, unless given express permission.

Museum staff must be consulted regarding filming specific items in the Maori and Pacific Galleries. General overviews are allowed, if deemed appropriate by the Director, but no specific artefacts may be highlighted.

Hall of Memories names must not be shown in any commercial purposes. If it is deemed appropriate for filming in these areas, they can only be seen from a distance.

The Holocaust Gallery is of such sensitivity that we do not allow filming in here for commercial purposes. Documentary crews may contact the Marketing Team for approval.

The Auckland Museum is often used as a location for film and commerical crews.  Prior permission must be sought from the Museum at least 10 days prior to filming.  All filming must be scheduled outside of Museum working hours (before 9am and after 5.30pm). The use of Museum as a location for movies and documentaries is permissable, however location, staff, security and associated fees apply. The concept story board must also be approved by Museum marketing staff.

Crews wishing to film or photograph the exterior of the Museum, must seek permission in advance as charges apply and permission must be granted for use of the Museums image.

Permission must also be sought from Auckland City Councils Events, Film and Facilitation team if filming is to occur in the Domain and if vehicles are to be parked for any length of time.

The base location fee for use of the Museum is $625 per hour plus gst.  Security fees start from $40 per hour per security officer.  A quote for staff time and other fees will be provided at time of booking.
