Winners of the Hamburg Animation Award 2009
Winners of the Hamburg Animation Award 2009

This LATE includes a screening of animations by students from Auckland submitted to the Hamburg (a sister-city of Auckland) Animation Competition.

The Hamburg Animation Award is an annual international competition for animation students and recent graduates, and a unique opportunity for Auckland’s young, up-and-coming animators to profile their work to an international audience. Cash prizes of over 10,000 Euros, a workshop with a leading Disney character designer and a special public screening in Hamburg can be won.

In recognition of the strategic alliance with Hamburg, New Zealand was selected as the profile country of the 2008 competition and since then Auckland City Council has annually promoted the competition in the city. Over the past three years, Auckland has successfully submitted 62 entries, resulting in three winning Auckland entries. In 2010, the Auckland animation Hellspital by a group of Media Design School students was nominated for the Hamburg audience award.

Council partnered with local industry sponsors, such as Flux Animation Studio and Auckland Museum to offer additional prizes for the 22 Auckland entries into this year's competition and annually hosts an Auckland award ceremony. Drop Fish by AUT student Sebastian Trujillo Benavides won first prize in the Auckland competition, closely followed by Slight Fishy by a group of Media Design School students, which was awarded the Auckland competition - runner up prize.
