Finlay Macdonald

FINLAY MACDONALD

Finlay Macdonald has worked as a journalist, editor, publisher and broadcaster in New Zealand since 1986. He was editor of the New Zealand Listener magazine from 1998 to 2003, commissioning editor at Penguin New Zealand from 2003 to 2005, and a weekly columnist for the Sunday Star-Times since 2003.

He also hosts interview and music programme Talk Talk and contributes to book show The Good Word on TVNZ7.

Sir Lloyd Geering

SIR LLOYD GEERING

Sir Lloyd Geering is many things: he’s an ordained Presbyterian minister, a prolific author, a distinguished academic, and a public figure of some renown – in 1988 he was made a Companion of the British Empire, and in 2001 he topped New Zealand’s New Year’s Honours list, being made a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

He’s also a progressive thinker whose work has been the subject of a good deal of controversy. In 1967, Lloyd Geering’s writings on the resurrection of Jesus and the immortality of the soul, resulted in his being charged by the Presbyterian Church with "doctrinal error" and "disturbing the peace of the church" – more or less the same thing as a heresy charge. Since then, he’s gone on to challenge Christian orthodoxy perhaps even more profoundly, by questioning the distinction between the religious and the secular worlds.

Play It Strange Trust

THE PLAY IT STRANGE TRUST

The Play It Strange Trust, which was established seven years ago by Mick Chunn to encourage young New Zealanders to develop interests and skills in song-writing and performance, has also arranged original musical sets from four Auckland schools that took part in the 2010 Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition.

Mike has curated the entertainment on the night and audiences will be treated to performances in gallery spaces around the Museum from him and his son as well as veteran rocker Jordan Luck, Monique Rhodes, Annah Mac, and young musicians from ACG College, Kaipara College, Western Springs College and Papatoetoe High School Girls.

Jordan Luck

JORDAN LUCK

Jordan Luck is the lead singer and songwriter for the New Zealand rock band The Exponents and an Inaugural Inductee into the New Zealand Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame. With the legendary Exponents, he clocked up a staggering 18 Top 40 singles over the years, with ‘Victoria’ recently voted by public as the 8th greatest New Zealand song of all time.

These days on any given weekend you will hear packed stadiums of sports fans singing in unison (if not in-tune) ‘Why Does Love Do This To Me?’ a song that seems to have taken on the mantle as the ‘unofficial’ alternative NZ national anthem.

Anna Mac

ANNAH MAC

Annah Mac, who won the songwriting competition at 15 and has since signed an exclusive four-album recording contract with Sony BMG, will perform four songs. Annah is a singer/songwriter with a dedicated and ferocious ambition; a sincere love of performing; and a writing talent rarely seen in any country, Annah has achieved much in her preparation and at last she is ready to take her music to the people.

She has written a repertoire of truly insightful, evocative songs where melody and words collide in mesmerizing fashion.

Monique Rhodes

MONIQUE RHODES

New Zealand born singer/songwriter Monique Rhodes is classically trained and has gone from violinist to rocker. Her acoustic rock sound has been described as a cross between Grammy award winning artist Sheryl Crow and Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan but in reality she is in a league of her own. Her intimate and positively charged performances often deeply move members of her audiences and her desire for complete connection with her audiences create a masterful and exhilarating experience.

Monique was nominated for New Zealander of the Year 2010 for her charity work, she has produced two Christmas albums (Merry Christmas Baby and So This Is Christmas) the proceeds of which going to the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society.
