LATE 04: Earth's Gravest Challenge with Dr Julian Cribb

LATE 04: Panellist and Artists

Thursday, 7 July , 6.30pm

Author and food security expert Julian Cribb attracted a capacity crowd for the July LATE at the Museum. LATE audiences heard that the wall-to-wall food on our supermarket shelves is giving a false impression of how much food is available – in reality Cribb says an oil crisis or an outbreak of a crop disease is all it would take to see food prices rocket up and supplies dry up. “There is a lot we can all do at a personal level to protect the planet and our own health. We can eat less high energy foods and fifty per cent more vegetables and fruits. We can also grow our own and save seeds from our food.” Cutting down food waste is another strategy people need to think about, says Cribb. “We throw out a lot of good food that there is nothing wrong with – people need to think about making less food or finding new ways of using up their leftovers if they do make extra.”

After the talk the crowd was left wowed by the incredible voice and songwriting talents of rising star Tiny Ruins singer Hollie Fullbrook. Fullbrook’s lyrics left the packed atrium strangely hushed before Carolina Moon took the stage with her unmistakable world sound.

Smart Talk

Special guest author Julian Cribb discusses Earth’s Gravest Challenge and whether we can avert the imminent food crisis. Finlay McDonald asks Professor Julian Cribb to discuss how water sustainability affects us globally and locally. Why will food become more expensive and scarce in years to come and what can be done now to conserve our resources? The discussion will cover the challenge facing civilization, how it is being covered in the media and the latest facts and figures on the emerging global food crisis.
