LATE 06 Are we really a Rugby Nation?

LATE 06 Panellists and Artists

Thursday, 1 September 2011

Apartheid and the 1981 Springbok rugby tour divided families and in some households saw women refusing to wash their husbands’ rugby uniforms. The tour was just one element of the September LATE debate which saw former All Black Grant Fox, historian Jock Phillips and Auckland University’s Dr Jennifer Curtin discussing whether New Zealand is still the rugby nation it once was.

Led by moderator Maggie Barry the panellists agreed the current fever around the Rugby World Cup shows rugby is still a well-loved game in New Zealand but Grant Fox pointed out the game is now competing with a host of other sports, weekend activities and other television events.

Discussing the 60,000 strong crowd attracted to a 1950s match between South Africa and the NZ Maori side, Fox said the rarity of international sides playing in New Zealand lent the matches added appeal.

Despite being the most televised sport in New Zealand Jock Phillips pointed out rugby ranks behind soccer and swimming in SPARCs participation stats. While we’re probably not the rugby nation we once were the panellists were unified in hoping for an All Blacks RWC victory.
