Matariki at Auckland Museum 2012

Matariki

Our 2012 programme was inspired by our Taumata's vision for the Museum:
Whakamana, nga taonga tuku iho, hei whakataki i nga ra ki muri. Honouring the past, Embracing the present, Guiding our future.

Matariki is a time for all New Zealanders to celebrate ingenuity and connectedness and to nurture future generations. The exciting month long programme features daily, weekly and one-off events which illuminate the Museum's overarching theme 'Te Mātahi o te Tau - the Freshness of a new beginning'.

The New Indigeneity. Creative potential of Matauranga Maori.

Charles Royal will speak on the four ‘horizons’ of indigenous development advanced by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, a Centre of Research Excellence hosted at The University of Auckland. They include addressing needs arising in Māori communities as well as creative opportunities and the growth of an entrepreneurial spirit in Māori communities.

What is sustainable? How do we know?

Dr Dan Hikuroa will speak about his research into indigenous approaches to natural resource management in the context of sustainability. For generations indigenous peoples have managed natural resources within a context of a kinship based relationship with our accustomed environments. In Aotearoa/New Zealand management of resources was undertaken by Māori within a context of impacts to mauri. Dr Hikuroa will discuss two case studies that explore the concept of using mauri as an indicator of sustainability.
