'Dude, Where's My Kai Moana?' - matauranga Māori and science working together for the restoration of Ōkahu Bay.... How do the wider issues of sustainability impact the planning for Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei’s restoration work in Ōkahu Bay and its catchment? How are Ngāti Whātua values shaping this? What can the sediment at Okahu Bay teach us about learning from the past to become better caretakers of our local ecosystem? How do we value mauri over money to ensure we avert our current trajectory of environmental degradation? |

Titiro ki muri kia whakatika ā mua-Look to the past to proceed into the future19 Jul, 7pm – 9pm |
The New Indigeneity. Creative potential of Matauranga Maori. Charles Royal will speak on the four ‘horizons’ of indigenous development advanced by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, a Centre of Research Excellence hosted at The University of Auckland. They include addressing needs arising in Māori communities as well as creative opportunities and the growth of an entrepreneurial spirit in Māori communities. What is sustainable? How do we know? Dr Dan Hikuroa will speak about his research into indigenous approaches to natural resource management in the context of sustainability. For generations indigenous peoples have managed natural resources within a context of a kinship based relationship with our accustomed environments. In Aotearoa/New Zealand management of resources was undertaken by Māori within a context of impacts to mauri. Dr Hikuroa will discuss two case studies that explore the concept of using mauri as an indicator of sustainability. |
* Numbers limited to 120 for each lecture. To book please email Nga Remu with 'Korero Tataki' in the subject line or ph 306 7070 extn 7178.
