The Institute has located a comfortable lounge bar downstairs at The Horse and Trap, where members and the public can meet and take part in a range of discussions. Participants are free to buy food and beverages from the bar and talk with the speaker and each other, exploring the latest ideas in science, the humanities, technology and the arts.
In a new development there will be two types of events: Cafe Scientifique and Cafe Humanities, depending on the topic.

FIELD TRIP - GREAT BARRIER AND MOTUKAIKOURA ISLANDS Easter 2010 - 2 - 5 April
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and as part of this focus, we want to get out and enjoy our own unique environment. Friends of the Auckland Museum are invited to spend Easter 2010, Easter (2 – 5 April 2010), at the Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre on Great Barrier Island in the company of DOC staff and Motu Kaikoura Trust members. Dr Anthony Bellvé chairs the Institute Council Programme Committee and is also on the Motu Kaikoura Trust. He has arranged for members to enjoy planned hikes, a boat trip to Motukaikoura Island and some elected activities such as kayaking with Pursuits Centre instructors. This is an adventure that should appeal to members of all ages including teenagers.
Motukaikoura Island (also known as Kaikoura Island) is the seventh largest island in the Hauraki Gulf. 90kms north east of Auckland it is located on the western coast of Great Barrier Island where it forms the natural harbours of Port FitzRoy and Port Abercrombie. It is over twice the size of Tiritiri Matangi (218ha) and more than three times the size of Motuihe (79ha). Predominantly covered in manuka and kanuka forest it also contains some pockets of native broadleaf forest including large trees such as pohutukawa, puriri and kohekohe, which provide the seed source to expand these forest remnants. It is home to the endangered brown teal and the North Island kaka and is also on the ‘flyway’ for species such as Cooks and Black petrel as they move between Great Barrier and their feeding grounds in the Hauraki Gulf and on the Kaipara Harbour. Bellbirds also move between Great Barrier and Little Barrier.
The island is protected as a Crown-owned reserve and managed by the Motu Kaikoura Trust established in 2002 to restore the natural environment of Motukaikoura Island by removing introduced plants and animals. It’s an exciting project and it will be a privilege to find out more in the company of such dedicated people.
Cost: Around $600 per person and includes all transport, food, accommodation and instructor-led activities over three days. We are finalising details and costs but would be keen to gauge interest, so if you’d like to join us, please email friends.events@aucklandmuseum.com We will record names and contact details and get back in touch in the New Year with more information. |
