In November 1929 the people of Auckland flooded to the opening of the Auckland War Memorial Museum which had been built to commemorate the sacrifice of the 7297 young men from the Auckland Province who had died in the Great War.
Along with the act of commemoration and remembrance there was the heartfelt hope that this was to be the war to end all wars. Unfortunately, this was not to be and in 1959 the southern section of Auckland War Memorial Museum was built partly to house a Hall of Memories, on whose walls are inscribed the names of the 4702 young Aucklanders who died in the Second World War. Since then more panels have had to be added for the names of those killed in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam. The final panels carry the inscribed hope let these panels never be filled.
