Second Floor
The Armoury is Auckland War Memorial Museum’s military information centre. Managed by library staff, it is an extension of the Museum Library, which has rich primary resources for the further study of our military history.
Visitors can ask questions about the role played by New Zealand in war and peacekeeping operations, conduct in-depth research or trace their ancestor’s military service through the Centre’s Cenotaph database. RSA volunteers are on hand to share their experiences and to assist with research projects.
One of the Armoury’s major resources is the award winning Cenotaph database. Library staff have completed records for all New Zealanders who died as a result of WWI, and are currently expanding it to include all the other conflicts of the 20th century in which New Zealanders gave their lives. Records contain photos were possible. Visitors are encouraged to supply any photographs and/or documents they may have about their forbears – these will be copied and returned. Cenotaph can be an emotional experience for many – it could be the first time that they have ever seen a photograph of their grandfather.
Using the Armoury computer’s check the Museum Library’s catalogue and access CD-ROMs. Other educational resources include books, magazines, maps and posters, videos, tape recorded interviews of people discussing personal war experiences, photographs, clipping files and newspapers on microfilm.
Adjacent to the Holocaust Gallery on the second floor, the Armoury also provides information for the study of the Holocaust.
On display in the Armoury are some of the weapons, armour and medals from the Museum’s extensive collections. |
