Almost a third of those killed during World War I have no known grave. New Zealand lost more men per head of population than any other nation involved in this conflict.
Aucklands World War One Roll of Honour is inscribed on the walls of the Museum, a memorial to commemorate the fallen.

Inscribed on the walls of the Sanctuary are the 7297 names of New Zealanders from the Auckland Province who died in the First World War. Almost a third of them have no known grave.
