The Armoury is the Museums military information centre, providing a rich resource for the study of New Zealand’s military history.
When you visit The Armoury, which is on the top floor of the Museum, feel free to ask us any questions about the role played by New Zealand in war and peacekeeping operations. You can also spend time conducting in-depth research of New Zealand’s experience of war or tracing your ancestor’s military service. RSA volunteers are on hand to share their experiences and to assist with research projects.
Visitors to The Armoury can check the Museum Library’s catalogue for further related material and access CD-ROMs. Other educational resources include books, magazines, maps and posters, videos, tape recorded interviews of people discussing personal war experiences, photographs, clipping files and newspapers on microfilm.
The Armoury also provides information for those who want to study more about the Holocaust. The Holocaust Gallery is located near The Armoury.
The Museum Library also welcomes donations of archival material relating to New Zealand service personnel and military organisations.
Weapons, Medals and Decorations
Weapons, armour and medals from the Museum’s extensive collections are on display in The Armoury gallery and background information about them can be foudn in the Information Centre.
Cenotaph Database
One of our major electronic resources is the Cenotaph database, which contains records and some photos for over 114,000 New Zealanders who gave their lives as a result of war, from South Africa in the 19th century, through the First and Second World Wars to Korea, Malaya and Vietnam in the 1950s to 1970s, and even recent peacekeeping deployments.
For many, this is can be an emotional experience - as it is often the first time they have ever found any information on their relative, let alone seen a photograph of them.
The Cenotaph database is an ongoing project. We welcome information, documents and photographs about New Zealanders in a War, this may be service in New Zealand or overseas. We are happy to copy materials, especially photographs and return the originals afterwards.
