Pat Matt the Rat

Pat Matt the Rat

A visit to the Discovery Centre

A Special Opportunity to Touch and Hold.

  • You will be met outside the museum by a Children's Discovery Centre facilitator with a rat puppet. She will lead your group into the Centre.
  • There she will give you an introduction about the centre.
  • She will use the following poem to aid the children’s understanding of handling live animals.
  • The staff member will then facilitate the children handling the rats.
  • Depending on the size of the groups and the adult assistance available this may need to be organised in groups while others play in the other areas of the Discovery Centre .

Pre-visit preparation:

  1. Talk about and read stories about the museum.
  2. Talk about and read stories about rats.
  3. Read and encourage participation in the following poem:

Pat Matt the Rat

by Glenys

Let’s pat Matt the rat
Pat his fur flat.
Have a short chat
About scruffy the cat.
Warn Matt about that!

Don’t squeeze him or tease him
Matt doesn’t like that.
Matt will fall splat
If you hold him like that.
Splat, flat on the mat!

Put Matt in a hat.
Put the hat on the mat.
Pat Matt’s fur flat.
Pat Matt the rat in the hat
on the mat.

Matt’s a gentle and friendly
Clean and fat rat!
