War Memorial programmes

Educator led gallery programmes are available on a range of learning areas related to how New Zealanders were involved in and affected by those conflicts in which our nation engaged during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These support the research elements of a number of NCEA subjects, and incorporate object handling, the information sources of the Armoury information centre and the Cenotaph database.
These are available through the year according to gallery and educator availability.

This programme aims to provide senior students with opportunities to gain understanding and insight about war related subjects from the spoken word and to experience this as part of an auditorium audience.
We offer two different vehicles for the spoken word – drama and lecture. The play Gunner Inglorious based on the experiences and writings of Jim Henderson will again be available. The arrangements for a second play and the lecture are not yet complete.
When these details are finalised this information will posted to the HODs History, Drama and English.
We hope to offer a play and a lecture each day. One at 11am and the other at 1pm. The War Memorial and galleries support this programme.

This trial programme is for learners of Japanese language. Initially we offer it only to Y9-11.
The programme has two parts - one takes the popular Japanese school Bunkasai festival as the theme and is offered in one of our classrooms. Here our educator leads students in three activities designed to practise students’ spoken and written Japanese within contexts revealing aspects of Japanese culture. In the process of learning students create materials to take back to school.
The other part of the programme is self led where by listening and reading students navigate a museum gallery in an exercise to practise grammar comprehension in a practical setting.

During the course of 2007 a number of schools took up the offer of using the Museum as a resource for a more in-depth study of topics of their own choice. This turned out to be quite challenging but was clearly enjoyed by the students who seemed to relish the chance to apply and sharpen some of the thinking skills they were exploring in their school settings.
If your school would like to be considered for the 2008 programme please email pmillward@aucklandmuseum.com
A teacher briefing will be held for 3-4 hours in Term 1 and the selected schools will be invited to complete their on-site work in one of two or three weeks designated for the purpose in Term 4.
