This database contains a selection of 212 kete from the Museum’s Maori collection – around 75% of the total kete collection. These kete illustrate the use of a range of materials and include a variety of types and designs.

Pacific Tapa (bark cloth) Pacific Tapa (bark cloth)
There are perhaps upwards of 1000 objects in the Auckland Museum’s various collections that include bark cloth in its manufacture. Presented here is a selection of Pacific bark cloth pieces, and the tools and equipment used in the processing and decoration of these.

Botany - Primary Types Botany - Primary Types
You can search the database using scientific names of the primary type specimens of New Zealand vascular plants (ferns, confers and flowering plants) from any level of the Linnaean classification hierarchy depending on how broad or narrow you want your search to be. Species are listed here under their currently accepted names.

This database is intended for the use of scientific and academic research. It's not possible to search for common names e.g., ponga, kauri, lemonwood.

Entomology - Primary Types Entomology - Primary Types
Search the database using scientific names for primary type specimens of all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrate animals except molluses from any level of the Linnaean classification hierarchy depending on how broad or narrow you want your search to be. You can also search on type status e.g., holotype, lectotype, or any key word for geographical locality e.g. Auckland, Waipoua, Kermadec, Fiordland.

This database is intended for the use of scientific and academic research. It's not possible to search for common names e.g., giant weta, butterfly, flax weevil, clapping cicada.

Entomology - Cicadas Entomology - Cicadas
Records in this part of the database are currently restricted to New Zealand cicadas.

A grant from the TFBIS fund administered by the Department of Conservation enabled preparation of these records.

Entomology - Lepidoptera Entomology - Lepidoptera
Records in this part of the database are restricted to New Zealand Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) that have been identified to species level. The collection contains other specimens awaiting expert identification; for enquiries regarding these please contact the curator on entomology@aucklandmuseum.com.
Marine - Primary Types Marine - Primary Types
Search for records of primary type specimens of the Marine Biology Collections. This collection also includes freshwater mollusca and excludes marine plants, which are found in the Botany database. The number of records available will be progressively expanded. You can search the database using scientific names from any level of the Linnaean classification hierarchy depending on how broad or narrow you want your search to be. An initial search can be refined.

This database is intended for the use of scientific and academic research. It's not possible to search for common names (e.g. kina, cockle, sea star).

Library Catalogue Library Catalogue
The Library Catalogue is a good starting point to see what books, pamphlets, and recent serials are held in the Museum Library. All of the manuscripts (e.g. letters, personal papers, diaries) and archives (e.g. business and organisation records), and some of the ephemera, maps and pictorial collections are also included.
