Army Art: Paintings by Captain Matt Gauldie

Army Art: Paintings by Captain Matt Gauldie

April 23 - 13 July 2008
Tamaki Gallery

NZ Army artist Matt Gaudie has created a series of highly evocative paintings that capture the New Zealand Defence Force serving in the remote mountains of Afghanistan and the tropical environment of the Solomon Islands. The exhibition will provide an opportunity for region’s residents and overseas tourists to see a contemporary portrayal of the life and work of today’s soldiers as captured by one of our own Army artists.

Seven paintings from the Unknown Warrior series, along with works depicting soldiers on operational deployments around the world will be part of the show.

Captain Gauldie says his is an on-going mission to define the unique culture of the New Zealand Army - “The exhibition will enable people to experience an insight into the modern New Zealand Army and gain understanding as to what we are all about,”
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon Helen Clark, officially appointed Matt Gauldie as NZ Army Artist on April 11, 2005. Six months later he was issued the honorary rank of Captain by the then Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae.
