Auckland Museum is joining forces with some of the biggest names in New Zealand music, including Tiki Taane, Nathan Haines and Don McGlashan, to work on a ground-breaking project called Sonic Museum, which will see the production of a series of exclusive new music tracks inspired by galleries at Auckland Museum.

Names of New Zealand’s Fallen Projected onto Auckland Museum in Special Anzac Commemoration
Each year Auckland War Memorial Museum forms the emotional hub for New Zealand’s largest city during Anzac Day.
The centrepiece of this year’s Auckland War Memorial Museum commemorations is the free Illuminate outdoor projection. Contemplate the sacrifice of our young nation as the names of the 35,000 New Zealanders who have died while serving their country – from the Anglo-Boer War to recent peace keeping missions – scroll across the northern façade of the Museum. The names will screen for three evenings leading up to Anzac Day (April 22, 23 and 24) from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Nathan Haines Performs LATE at Auckland’s Sonic Museum
He’s played alongside Jamiroquai and Blur’s Damon Albarn. Now Nathan Haines, New Zealand’s foremost jazz musician, is performing at a very special LATE at the Museum. Auckland Museum’s LATE event on Thursday, 7 May also welcomes the launch of an innovative experiment between museum and music called Sonic Museum.

In one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history, Richard Dreyfuss of Jaws cuts open a Great White Shark to reveal a crushed tin can and a license plate.
Auckland Museum plans to recreate this incredible feat when it performs a public autopsy on a 3.0 metre long, 300 kg Great White Shark on Thursday, 8 January.

Great White Shark Necropsy

Dissection of a Great White Shark
The event - the first of its kind for the Museum - organised to raise awareness of the threats facing the Great White species, was watched by a crowd of close to 4000 people, both from grandstands and on screens inside the Museum.
The necropsy was also watched live by over 30,000 people around the world on the Internet, and is now available to view from the Auckland Museum website. The procedure was carried out by Marine Scientist Clinton Duffy from the Department of Conservation’s Marine conservation Section, and Auckland Museum’s Marine Curator Dr. Tom Trnski. Read More ...
