No, you’d never see this scene in the wild, but that’s what happens when a museum needs to store its stuffed animal collection together. Ironically, were a lynx really to appear, the seal might be just as unconcerned as it appears here – it wouldn’t even register such an alien species, or it might just attack. Seals are very aggressive when threatened. You see – even though these examples of the taxidermist’s art aren’t alive, they can still teach us something. They also ask us questions about the role of a museum in presenting and preserving the reality and beauty of nature: what is real and what is artificial, and how do we respond to changing ideas about what to display and why?
