Fish of the Day
Before the use of liquid chemical preservatives, a favoured method of preserving fish specimens was with over-proof rum. Such specimens can smell rather nice, and there are recorded instances overseas of curators actually getting drunk in the fish storage departments of museums. The really old fish specimens, dating from as far back as the 17th century, were often tanned skins, either stuffed and painted or simply laid out flat for display.
