Fill' Er Up

66 Filler Er Up 560

Once upon a time – between the first and third centuries AD – this Roman amphora would have held olive oil. It was recovered from the Mediterranean sea floor and eventually found its way to the museum’s archaeology collection. Such history! But when it was originally displayed in the front foyer visitors often mistook it for a rubbish bin, even chucking the crusts from the museum café’s famous ham sandwiches into it. Maybe it’s better off in storage after all.
