Not that long ago, being a bird fancier usually meant being a bird killer, too. The carrion crow here was collected in the Siberian tundra in 1877 by wealthy English industrialist and keen bird collector Henry Seebohm. The bluebird and sparrow were taken from what were then remote and rugged parts of North America by the collector Edward Nelson – who was also famous for alleviating the climatic hardships he endured in Alaska by paying Eskimo women to sleep in his wet clothes so they would be dry by morning. Unlike amassing huge stuffed bird collections, though, this idea never really caught on.
