‘Dreaming of Dinos’ Family Day
Saturday 21 February 2009 11am – 1.30pm Auditorium Your chance to delve deep into the world of New Zealand dinosaurs by lunching, listening and talking with experts on our dinosaur past. Handle replicas of fossilised dinosaur bones found in New Zealand and share a tasty lunch with the legendary amateur fossil hunter Joan Wiffen, whose persistence and hard work overturned the widely held notion that there were no dinosaurs in New Zealand. Dr Jeffrey Stilwell of Monash University in Melbourne will describe searching and finding dinosaur fossils on the Chatham Islands and Te Papa’s curator of fossil birds, Alan Tennyson, will describe life in New Zealand’s prehistoric past.

Level One Special Gallery and Natural History Galleries
Are you brave enough to spend a prehistoric night at Auckland Museum? Armed with only a torch and your wits, hunt for the secrets of Sue the T. rex, embark on a torchlight trail to find our own lively prehistoric inhabitants, make dino crafts, enjoy a snack around a ‘campfire' listening to spooky dino tales and still have time to check out the A T. rex Named Sue exhibition. Whew! When you're exhausted settle down to sleep and hope you survive the night.
Recommended for ages 6-12. (Not suitable for children under 6 years-old or over 14 years-old)

Fossil Footsteps
Saturday 15 November 2008 to Friday 20 March 2009
Put on your explorer’s hat and search the Origins gallery for clues about New Zealand’s prehistoric past when dinosaurs wandered through the forests and the oceans teemed with giant marine reptiles. With the help of an activity booklet follow a trail answering questions and collecting clues to piece together a picture of life in the Cretaceous.
(Included with entry ticket to A T.rex Named Sue exhibition).
T.Rex Tours - Talking T. rex with the Curators
When: Every Tuesday in February, 11am – 11.30am Cost: Exhibition entry fee, plus $5 for the tour.
Take a guided tour of the Auckland Museum’s T.rex exhibition with our three Natural History curators - Ewen Cameron, John Early, and Brian Gill.
Every week, one of our three prehistoric explorers will share their knowledge of the Cretaceous period and the giant T.rex that roamed the planet. You’ll also learn about ancient plant species, monstrous walking birds, and the curious reptiles of the sea. You may even recognise some of the survivors of this treacherous period in history.
The tour ends with a discussion in the Museum’s Natural History Galleries.
