Maori Arts & Crafts

The Auckland Museum’s shops have the best collection of Maori Arts and Crafts available in Auckland.

The Foyer shop offers jewellery and carvings in traditional Maori symbology.  Including the mysterious Hei Tiki, available in Pounamu (jade) and carved bone.  Contemporary replicas of Maori weapons are also available; Pounamu Mere, wooden Patu (clubs), and Taiaha (spear).  Beautiful carved wooden Teko Teko (statuary), masks and Waka Huia (treasure boxes).  We have carved Maori flutes - Koauau - and other musical instruments, along with intricate handwoven Kete (basket) and the iconic Poi and stick games.

Pounamu (New Zealand Nephrite Jade)

The Auckland Museum shops offer an extensive range of quality Jade pendants and sculpture in Maori themes and symbols.

Wooden Carvings

From Waka Huia (treasure chests) to Taiaha (spear) we have beautifully carved replicas. Patterned traditionally and highlighted with colourful paua shell, Maori carving is dramatic and spiritual.

 Weaving

Our weaving encompasses sturdy  pipi baskets, to exiquiste Muka (flax) decorative pieces.  Kete (baskets) with flashes of paua shell show a modern twist.  Raupo (bullrush) poi made with traditional methods are also available.

Books and Music

In our Atrium shop we have  books on Maori Art, History and Culture.  Also find here traditional and contemporary Maori music.  Listen to a few tracks of songstress Whirimako Black, or the haunting reproduction of ancient music by the late Hirini Melbourne.

We are open every day (excl. Dec 25th and Anzac day am, 25th April) from 10am to 5pm.
