Patiti – curved whalebone-handle tomahawk that once belonged to Kereopa te Rau. His widow presented it to Mair at Whakarewarewa in 1872.

Koauau – flute made from the arm bone of Te Kooti’s Buglar, Baker McLean, who was shot and killed at Waikarawhiti (near Tumunui) by Mair in February 1870. The koauau was presented to Mair by Ngati Pahauwera at Te Haroto in 1874.

Mere pounamu – greenstone hand weapon. It belonged to the great Tauranga chief Koraurau, whose famous pa was Te Papa (Cemetery Point). Hohepa Hikutaia presented Te Raukaraka to Mair in Tauranga in 1866.

Tiki – carved ancestral figure that once stood in front of the central post of the original Tama te Kapua meeting house in Ohinemutu, and later the Tutanekai meeting house at Owhata (Hinemoa Point).

Kinikini – rare type of rain cape. This cloak was loaned to Hamilton at the Dominion Museum in 1901. Current research attributes this taonga as the one Te Kooti presented to Mair at Matata on 12 January 1884.

Potaka Tawhiti

Kumete – carved bowl presented to Mair by carver Wero Taroi from Okataina. There have been three famous dogs called Potaka Tawhiti in Te Arawa history. The original dog lived 26 generations ago and was the loyal companion of Houmaitawhiti and his sons Tama te Kapua and Whakaturia.

Wakahuia – carved container designed to be suspended from the rafters into which small taonga, such as huia feathers, could be stored. Recovered by Mair from Tuhoto Ariki’s whare while digging him out after the Tarawera eruption in 1886.

Tiheru

Tiheru – baler presented by Kereopa’s elder brother to Judge Bowen after the signing of Kereopa’s death warrant in Napier, then some years later passed into Mair’s keeping.

Whakapakoko Atua – a protective talisman to ensure plentiful crops of kumara, named after an ancient ancestor of Hawaiki, Marutuahu. Presented to Mair by Wiremu Kingi at Torere in 1882.

Wakahuia – carved container designed to be suspended from the rafters into which small taonga, such as huia feathers, could be stored. Presented by Te Taupua to Mair at Ohinemutu, while Mair was escorting Governor Grey around the Bay of Plenty in 1865.
