Armoury Information Centre

The Armoury

The Museum's military information centre, provides a rich resource for the study of New Zealand’s military history. When you visit the Armoury on the top floor of the Museum, feel free to ask us any questions about the role played by New Zealand in war and peacekeeping operations. You can also spend time conducting in-depth research of New Zealand’s experience of war or tracing your ancestor’s military service. RSA volunteers are often on hand throughout the week to share their experiences and to assist with your research projects.

Armoury holds many resources - books, magazines, photographs, microfilms, newspaper cuttings and you can use several databases.

The Armoury also provides information for those who want to study more about the Holocaust. The Holocaust Gallery is located near the Armoury.

The Museum Library also welcomes donations of archival material relating to New Zealand service personnel and military organisations.

Weapons, Medals and DecorationsWeapons, armour and medals from the Museum’s extensive collections are on display in the Armoury Gallery and background information about them can be found in the Armoury Information Centre.

The Cenotaph Database

The Cenotaph database contains biographical records and some photos for over 140,000 New Zealanders, many of whom gave their lives as a result of war. Although 99,000 names are from World War One, there are entries for men and women who served in the New Zealand Wars and South Africa in the 19th century, through the First and Second World Wars to Korea, Malaya and Vietnam in the 1950s to 1970s, and even up to recent deployments in Afghanistan.

For many, this is can be an emotional experience - as it is often the first time they have ever found any information on their relative, let alone seen a photograph of them. The Cenotaph database is an ongoing project. We welcome information, documents and photographs about New Zealanders in a war; this may be service in New Zealand or overseas. We are happy to copy materials, especially photographs and return the originals afterwards.
