Photography & Filming

Private Photography

Visitors are welcome to use hand-held cameras with flash as well as video recording equipment for private purposes only in the galleries unless otherwise indicated. Tripods may only be used with prior approval from the Communications Department. Video recording equipment may not be used in the Maori cultural performance.

Filming and Professional Photography

Professional photography and filming, including all media and commercial organisations, is only permitted by prior arrangement with our Communications Department.

The Communications Department deals with all professional and commercial requests to photograph or film objects, exhibits and locations within the Museum. Commercial or professional photography and filming must be arranged in advance through the Communications Department.

In order to deal with requests in an effective manner, the Museum appreciates at least ten working days notice with indication of what you propose to photograph, where you propose to photograph, and a clear outline of the context in which the images or video will be reproduced. Depending on the nature of your request, charges may apply.

The Communications Office welcomes photography and filming enquiries from media and appreciates the nature of these activities and associated timeframes.

Please contact the Communications Department by emailing marketing@aucklandmuseum.com

Maori & Pacific Galleries

Images of taonga are of significant cultural importance to Maori and many objects in the Maori galleries require prior permission for photography or filming. The Communications Department can assist you with seeking these permissions.

Hotunui, the Maori meeting house, requires written permission from the Taipari whanau (whom the Meeting House is on deposit from) before being photographed or filmed. Please contact the Communications Department by emailing marketing@aucklandmuseum.com.

Weddings

Auckland Museum often receives requests to use the museum as a backdrop for wedding photographs. Unless the reception has taken place at the museum, we cannot allow wedding photos inside the museum. External photography is allowed.
