New Zealand’s first complete talking picture The Romance of Maoriland was commenced on the slopes of Mangere Mountain during the weekend. The picture shows the cameramen with their complicated recording apparatus shooting Toe Toe who does a solo dance. The Sun, Auckland, Monday 7 October, 1929.

Our Historic Landscape 

From their extensive collection, the New Zealand Film Archive presents an amusing and informative compilation of historic footage, set in and around Auckland.

This year's theme is Auckland's historic landscape - celebrating layers and fabric of Auckland's historic environment.

Auckland 1900-1924

Saturday 25 September
1.30pm – 2.30pm

A collection of the earliest film footage of Auckland. From a Royal visit in 1901, troops off to war, and the All Blacks playing at Eden Park, this programme gives an overview of Auckland a century ago.

Auckland 1925-1949

Sunday 26 September
1.30pm – 2.30pm

From slapstick hi-jinks and early special effects in the ever-popular local film A Takapuna Scandal, to a new train station, men returning from war and a nationwide housing shortage. With the introduction of sound, we begin to hear, as well as see, events from Auckland's past.

Auckland 1950-1974

Saturday 2 October
1.30pm – 2.30pm

The industrial action of the 1951 watersider's lockout, a Royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II, the heat wave of 1955, the construction of new harbour bridge, and Maori urbanisation and Polynesian migration. With the advent of colour film, Auckland begins to show the multicultural look of a modern city.

Auckland 1975-1999

Sunday 3 October
1.30pm – 2.30pm

There's Bastion Point, the Queen Street riots, and the community spirit of the Grey Lynn Festival. As video takes over from film, this programme shows footage from Auckland at the end of the 20th Century.

Auckland 2000-2010

Saturday 9 October
1.30pm – 2.30pm

The first trains run at the new Britomart Station, the food of immigrant cultures is explored and hip-hop culture transforms Aotea Square. As Auckland enters the next millennium, new stories and old are told and retold.

Auckland Museum hosts New Zealand Film Archive film screenings.
