Anzac honours those soldiers who fought at Gallipoli during World War I. It also commemorates those who have served in all conflicts that the country has been involved in. This Anzac we remember the contribution to war by our Pacific neighbours, and how their people, culture and homes have been shaped by conflict. We honour all soldiers’ selfless sacrifice and celebrate the freedom and privileges they secured for us all. This Anzac we remember war in the Pacific.

OUR SYMBOLIC MEETING-PLACE
New Zealand sent more men to fight in World War I per head of population than any other nation. Of those killed, almost a third were buried half a world away in unmarked graves. Following the war, subscriptions were raised to construct the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The Museum opened in 1929 and became a symbolic meeting-place for Aucklanders to focus their grief. Join us on Anzac day for a special free guided tour around the war memorial galleries.
ILLUMINATE
Mon 22 – Wed 24 April From sunset until 10pm
Today Auckland War Memorial Museum still forms the city’s emotional hub around Anzac Day. In the lead-up to Anzac Day we will project a film onto the Museum’s northern façade. Starting after sunset this year’s Illuminate film will focus on the contributions and sacrifices of Pacific peoples and the conflicts that played out in Pacific region.
