(Advanced search function lets you search on type status, geographical locality, collector, date etc.)

The database is intended for scientific and academic research so searching must be done on scientific names from family level or lower in the Linnaean classification hierarchy. It’s not possible to use common names e.g., paua, huhu beetle, little penguin.

Circa 57,000 records are currently available comprising:

  • Terrestrial invertebrates – all primary types (312)
  • Insects – all Hemiptera and Lepidoptera (ca 24,000)
  • Birds (14,000)
  • Land mammals (1,500)
  • Reptiles and amphibians (3,140)
  • Marine invertebrates, mainly molluscs (ca 14,000)
  • Other groups will be released as data are checked.

These links will allow you to search a small portion of data about the Museum collections, representing less than 1% of the total collection items. Other parts of the collection will be made available in the future.

We value your comments about our collections, so please feel free to contact our curators and help us continue to improve our service to the public.
