"A picture paints a thousand words", or so the saying goes. However, for the Ancient Egyptians, this simply wasnt true. For them, Hieroglyphics were inextricably entwined with numerous facets of their culture. Art and language were symbiotic partners - both performing the same function(s), albeit via a different medium. The characters of language were viewed as living entities, and whether standing alone, or wrapped around pictorial reliefs in the form of an extrinsic inscription, cosmologies, mythologies, rites for entrance to the Underworld and Afterlife, the names of royals and individuals, military epics and recipes for incense, were all personified by Hieroglyphics.

The Mythology of Ancient Egypt

Wednesday 25 July, 7.30 — 9pm
Presented by: Jennifer Hellum
Enrolment through CCE. Phone: 0800 864 266 or mailto:conted@auckland.ac.nz
The mythology of the Egyptians was centred around three main lines: the beginnings of the world, the beginnings of ancient Egypt as a country, and the world of the dead and their journey into the underworld. The last of these three ideas, that of the world of the dead, is the one with which most people are familiar, largely due to the abundance of material culture concerned with it. Throughout Egypt’s ancient history, the concept of the afterlife evolved and changed but only in the details. For most of Egypt’s 3000 years of history, the mythology of the underworld was set, giving us a fascinating glimpse into the Egyptian thoughts on death and the afterlife.

The Art of Ancient Egypt

Presented by: Jennifer Hellum

Much of Egyptian art has been found in funerary contexts, but much of it is concerned with life, as the afterlife, and providing for the tomb-owner therein. The Egyptians didn’t create art for its own sake; it was used toward a purpose, and in a funerary context, that purpose was showing life as it should be in the underworld, and life as it was on earth. As a result, a great deal of what we know now about Egyptian life is due to the artwork on the walls of the tombs.
