Art Of GlassWho says we’re not real? Okay, we’re not real sea creatures, but we’re still real. We were made by a family of glassblowers in Dresden named the Blaschkas. They specialised in making museum specimens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We must have been produced before 1890, because after that the Blaschkas were exclusively contracted to Harvard University. Restoring us to display standard is a huge challenge for the conservation staff – the secret glass-working methods used by the Blaschkas went to the grave with them. So there you go – we’re rare, we’re delicate, we’re historic and we’re special – how much more real can we get?
