The tanoa is carved into the shape of a vonu (turtle with head, front and back limbs carved as features around the rim). Two slits are incised across the top sides of the vonu head, and its carved front flippers are missing. One of the supporting yava i va on the underside of the tanoa vonu has broken off. The tanoa vonu is brown in colour with surface patina.
