Taulima laumei
Taulima laumei. Bracelet of turtle shell. This is a handmade taulima laumei. This taulima is made of seven rectangular pieces of pakua laumei (turtle shell). The pakua laumei is heated and carved to create the rectangular pieces. They have then been drilled with a hole in each corner and connected using small metal rings. Two pakua laumei are connected using a piece of red thread, and the other a black thread. All the pakua laumei pieces are a dark brown colour except for one, located towards the middle of the taulima. This piece is a lighter shade of brown mixed with yellow. This piece has been carved and filled with silver inlay to create decorative motifs. The same material is also used to spell the word SAMOA on the same piece.
Tautaliga laumei. Earrings of turtle shell. These are handmade beads used for tautaliga laumei. These beads would have been part of a pair of drop tautaliga (earrings) however they are both missing a lave (hook). The beads are made of pakua laumei (turtle shell). The pakua laumei has been heated and carved to create the tear drop shape. It has then been drilled with various shaped grooves to be filled with silver for decoration. The silver inlay is diamond shaped with a few pieces shaped like flowers. The silver has since turned a copper colour with age while the pakua laumei is a dark brown colour. These tautaliga are likely to have been made for the tourist market as a collectible item.
