Te iriba

Iriba. Fan. This is a hand held fan. It features two material components: te ira (pandanus leaf) and kiaiai (Hibiscus baste; Hibiscus tiliaceus). It is flat in form with a circular shape for the blade of the iriba and a cylindrical form for the handle. A thin and hard piece of material appears to have been used to reinforce the handle and spine of the iriba. Strands of kiaiai baste dyed in red, green and dark yellow have been woven to create decorative features that border the iriba and pattern the handle. The circular part of the iriba is composed of a plain weave from neutral coloured tresses of te ira. The border of the iriba is serrated and then double lined with a strand of te ira.
