Mat, pandanus. Eight pointed star shape, checkerwork with overlaid darker strips forming words NIUAFOOU DEC 1946 and a cherub/fairy? with butterfly. Collected by donor's father serving on 'Matua' c.1943, when the people of the island were evacuated because of an eruption.
