Kapa

human history

Kapa. Two small samples of Kapa. Made from the baste of tree bark from the wauke (Paper mulberry tree, Broussonetia papyrifera). Both square in shape. One has been dyed and one has retained its natural colouring in an ivory white. The natural ivory white sample shows signs of the ho'opa'i beater. When held up to the light it's transparency defines the fine lines made from the grooves of the ho'opa'i beater. It is rough and crisp to hold. The other sample is dyed in a mustard yellow colour. It's colouring shows it could have been dyed with certain natural sources such as the root of 'olena, noni or holei. Compared to the white sample, this piece is light in weight and drapes more delicately. Both appear to have been cut from larger pieces.
