‘Ato fu’e umu lapotopoto
'Ato fu’e umu lapotopoto. Round plaited food basket. This is a handwoven 'ato (basket). It features a braided, oval base and a long depth with a circular opening that is larger than its base. It has been woven from lau niu (coconut palm leaf). It has been woven when the lau niu was still green which results in its current colouring and stiffness of fibre. The term lapotopoto refers to its round plait at the base of the 'ato. This particular 'ato would be used for carrying mea'ai (food). It would also be considered a simple style of 'ato. These 'ato are made on the flat plane and when the desired depth of them is reached then the ends are plaited together to form an oblong, and for the plaiting of the base to finish off.
